Alira—the newest singing sensation from the UAE—has taken the internet by storm after videos of him singing a popular Filipino song during a Dubai concert went viral on social media.
Alira shocked audiences at the Paskong Handog sa Pinoy Concert in Dubai when he took the stage to flawlessly sing the popular Filipino ballad Tuwing Umuulan (Everytime it Rains) in his trademark countertenor voice.
One video on Expat Media alone got nearly 500,000 views on Facebook, with more than 15,000 reactions and nearly 3,000 shares as of December 27. Similar videos were also posted by other fans on TikTok and Instagram, where Alira’s jaw-dropping performance gained combined views of nearly 1 million.
“You will probably be wondering how I could pronounce or even sing in Tagalog.. I was coming back from a trip and I came across the song.. I didn’t know what language it was. But then it was actually by a female artist from the Philippines by the name of Angeline Quinto called Patuloy ang Pangarap (Dreams Continue). So right then and there I took it upon myself, I went home that day and I searched for all the Filipino songs,” Alira told the audience.
He also sang Kailangan Kita (I Need You), which he said was the first Filipino song that he learned, and his hit song Take Flight, which is now a dance craze on TikTok.
In that Dubai concert, Alira shared the stage with Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, pop-rock princess Yeng Constantino and Asia’s Soul Supreme KZ Tandingan.
Also in December, he performed at a concert with Danish band Michael Learns to Rock and American cover band Boyce Avenue for the UAE’s golden year anniversary at Dubai Festival Arena.
“Stay blessed, stay hopeful.. each and every one of you matters. Each and every one of you counts. You’re beautiful, you’re unique, you’re special,” Alira told the crowd at the end of the performance.
